Prime Minister Modi concluded his 9-day, five-country tour that began on 2 July, his longest visit since 2014. This trip consists of five different countries from different regions, including Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil and Namibia. He attended the BRICS Summit, received four national awards and held bilateral talks. The visit spotlights the international attention as it was at a crucial point in International dynamics, where the countries are dealing with various conflicts and on the other hand, new forms of alliances and reconfigurations of economies are recasting the Global South’s position in international politics. This visit took him across West Africa, the Caribbean, and South America, which showed the concrete gains across different sectors from defence and fintech to critical minerals and diaspora outreach. India also deepened its bilateral agreements with the leaders of these countries. Moreover, making visits to these countries shows that India wants to deepen its ties to counter China’s influence in these regions, and all five nations are UN members, so they can help by providing support against the reforms and other issues.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE VISIT:
This tour marked as a strategic assertion of India’s evolving global role, especially the Global South. It marked a diplomatic reset with regions previously disregarded at the highest level, transforming symbolic visit into substantive partnerships.
Reaffirming old partnerships:
Many of these countries had not been visited by an Indian Prime Minister for decades, Ghana for 30 years, Trinidad & Tobago since 1999 and Argentina after 57 years, making a deliberate effort to elevate India’s partnership. It marked India’s key role in building relations, especially in the Global South, promoting inclusive development and equitable growth. Moreover, PM Modi’s visit to Ghana signifies strengthening India's relations with West Africa, ECOWAS and the African Union.
Countering Terrorism Threat:
A strong message against the menace of terrorism was a consistent theme throughout the tour. At the BRICS Summit, PM Modi called for unified global action and denounced double standards in dealing with terrorism. He stressed not to politicise the terror and not to equate the victims and sponsors of terror. His remarks reinforced India’s position as a key voice advocating for global security and zero tolerance towards extremism.
Countering China’s Dominance:
PM Modi’s five-nation tour served as a calculated diplomatic initiative to reduce the Global South’s dependence on China by offering India as a reliable and inclusive partner. Through strategic and diplomatic ties, India’s dominance can be evident with the countries in Africa and South America. From establishing a vaccine hub in Ghana and signing rare earth and lithium partnerships in Africa and Latin America, to advocating against ‘build-operate-export’ infrastructure at the BRICS Summit, the tour emphasised sustainable, debt-free cooperation, significantly reducing Chinese reliance. It also aimed to diversify strategic alignments, promote multipolarity, and present India as a credible alternative in shaping the emerging world order.
INDIA EMERGES AS THE LEADING VOICE OF THE GLOBAL SOUTH
Prime Minister Modi’s five-nation tour firmly positioned India as the leading voice of the Global South. The nations of the Global South share common aspirations, may their colonial struggles, climate change, debt burdens, lack of access to resources, and much more. India’s ancient philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” resembles the contemporary foreign policy, which aims for South-South cooperation and a multipolar world. The tour highlights that these countries have significant economic opportunities, presenting India with a base for investment and collaborative ventures.
In the absence of the top leaders of Russia and China, India emerged as a leading voice and senior statesman at the 17th BRICS Summit. PM Modi highlighted the issues of global governance as he noted that voices from the Global South nations have been marginalised in institutions like the WTO, IMF, UN Security Council and WTO. Across Africa and South America, Modi emphasised South-South cooperation, technological partnerships, and shared development goals rooted in historical solidarity. This tour signifies India’s leadership, crucial for the development and prosperity in the Global South.
